Randor Residence
The Remington House is a contemporary single-family residence in Toronto, where passive design strategies, structural ingenuity, and custom millwork shape a highly adaptable and light-filled living environment. Defined by bold geometric volumes, expansive glazing, and a restrained material palette, the home prioritizes natural light, open-plan flexibility, and a seamless connection to the outdoors.
Designed with a series of clerestory windows and skylights, the home leverages natural daylight and passive ventilation, significantly reducing reliance on artificial lighting and mechanical systems. The angled rooflines allow for a dynamic play of light and shadow, while strategically placed openings optimize air circulation, reinforcing an energy-efficient interior climate.
To maintain an uninterrupted spatial experience, a system of structural columns and mechanical shafts has been precisely positioned to eliminate bulkheads and ensure an uncompromised ceiling plane. This approach not only enhances vertical continuity but also fosters a sense of openness and fluidity, reinforcing the home’s minimalist ethos.
The interior aesthetic balances warm wood surfaces, smooth plaster walls, and natural light, creating a refined yet inviting atmosphere. The open kitchen, featuring a bold black-and-white contrast, is accentuated by large-format pendant lighting and a monolithic island, providing a central hub for family activity. Dark wood flooring runs throughout, anchoring the space with a sense of warmth and continuity.
A custom glass and steel staircase, with transparent railings, enhances the home’s visual lightness, creating a sculptural yet unobtrusive vertical connection between levels.
One of the home’s most distinctive features is the custom-built millwork for the children’s loft space, where storage, circulation, and playful engagement merge into a singular architectural element. The bespoke bookshelf staircase, integrated with cubbies and storage compartments, serves both as a playful access point to the loft and a functional display for books and toys. This design fosters an environment of interaction, independence, and discovery, reinforcing the home's adaptability to evolving family needs.
Through its integration of passive design, spatial efficiency, and tactile materiality, the Remington House offers a thoughtfully crafted living experience, where every design decision enhances both function and emotion. A testament to modern family living, the residence is defined by its ability to evolve, adapt, and inspire.
