Aquavil Azores
Set along the dramatic volcanic coastline of the Azores, the development embraces panoramic Atlantic Ocean views, lush rolling hills, and the region’s unique microclimate. The project is designed as a series of villas stepping down the terrain to maximize ocean visibility while preserving natural contours.
The architecture blends contemporary resort living with the Azores’ vernacular inspiration. Buildings are organized in a linear formation parallel to the coast, each featuring large glazed façades and generous balconies to connect interior living spaces with the surrounding landscape. The design emphasizes clean, modern lines, contrasting light and dark façade materials, and warm wood accents to create a refined yet inviting atmosphere.
The façade strategy integrates white composite cladding panels with expanses of floor-to-ceiling glazing, highlighted by warm-toned aluminum or wood-look framing elements. This palette echoes the brightwashed architecture of Portuguese coastal towns while providing a contemporary reinterpretation. The deep balconies and overhangs not only extend the living spaces outdoors but also provide shading from the intense Atlantic sun.
Each villa contains between 11 and 16 suites, allowing flexibility in configuration for different hospitality models. Rooftop terraces with pergolas provide communal spaces with sweeping ocean views, while landscaped areas and pools nestle between the villas for privacy and relaxation. Pathways and green corridors connect the villas, fostering a sense of community while maintaining seclusion for guests.
Sustainability is a key consideration, with passive solar strategies, natural cross-ventilation, and locally sourced materials reducing environmental impact. The orientation and spacing of buildings allow for maximum daylight penetration while minimizing heat gain, ensuring year-round comfort with reduced reliance on mechanical systems.
