Harwood Towers
Rising prominently in Ajax’s evolving urban skyline, the development at 1951 Harwood Avenue North presents a bold and contemporary architectural statement that blends clean geometry, expansive glazing, and modern façade treatments. The twin mid-rise towers are carefully articulated to create a dynamic streetscape presence while preserving openness and view corridors, enhancing the sense of scale for both residents and pedestrians.
The façade expression is defined by a rhythmic interplay of horizontal glazing bands and vertical framing elements, creating a sleek and visually cohesive elevation. Framing elements in a dark-toned cladding provide a crisp contrast to the lighter balcony profiles, giving the towers a sharp, elegant silhouette. The continuous ribbon of windows amplifies natural light penetration into the suites, while the building’s stepped and angled forms maximize sightlines to surrounding landscapes.
A defining design element of this project is the integration of Lumon enclosed balcony railing systems, which elevate the building’s visual sophistication while enhancing year-round usability for residents. These frameless, retractable glass panels offer unobstructed views when open, and protection from the elements when closed—blurring the boundary between interior and exterior space. The Lumon system also contributes to the building’s energy efficiency by reducing heat loss and buffering wind exposure, while maintaining the sleek transparency that complements the overall façade design.
At the pedestrian level, an activated podium houses a mix of retail and amenity spaces, framed with generous glazing to create transparency and connectivity between the street and building interior. The podium’s architectural language reflects the material richness of the upper volumes, balancing a human-scaled rhythm with generous canopies, seating areas, and landscaped forecourts to encourage public interaction.
The towers are oriented to embrace views of both the natural and urban surroundings, with upper-level suites benefiting from expansive vistas of the Ajax landscape and Lake Ontario beyond. The composition of the massing ensures that each wing of the building receives optimal daylight exposure, while shared amenity terraces on the podium roof create social hubs that connect residents to the outdoors.
This project embodies a modern, sustainable, and resident-focused approach to urban living—uniting functional design, elegant detailing, and thoughtful integration of cutting-edge balcony systems into a landmark development for Ajax’s north end.
