Hidden Eruption
The ancient volcano and its adjacent cinder cone rise from the grassy plane of the Renisfjara black sands beach. The scent of sulphur hangs prominent in the cool air from the hissing rock as the visitor approaches. The two volcanic masses intertwine and connect at the entrance that draws the visitor inwards along the intersecting curvatures. Upon entering the long dormant eruptions, the visitor is presented with a view, sound and smell out towards the central vent that contains the geothermal waters below. The invited guests are welcomed into the volcano and its spiraling ramp — an ascending promenade designed for the visually impaired that eliminates the need for vertical circulation of stairs — with the rising steam following that leads to the accommodations at the apex of the funnel. The visitors are connected to the adjacent crater through their gastronomic experience, and are presented with the sensual pottery exhibit. The entire experience is of at once an ancient contained but yet open space.
